Understanding Protected Health Information & HIPAA

It is our desire to safeguard your protected health Information (PHI). PHI is any health information including a patient’s past, present or future health care related services. This includes demographics, documentation of symptoms, examinations, test results, diagnoses and treatments.

The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1966 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule permits providers to use and disclose PHI without a patient’s written authorization for purposes of treatment, payment and health care operations. This allows us to send a patient’s PHI to continuing care providers, facilities and insurance companies to better assist in your health care. Your written authorization to share PHI with anyone other than your spouse is needed in your patient file.
